What is a Board Foot?

A Board Foot (bd ft) is the unit of volume used for measuring and pricing hardwood. One board foot is equal to a piece of wood 12" wide x 12" long x 1" thick.

Formula: (Length x Width x Thickness) ÷ 144

Buying Lumber: The Workshop Guide

1. Rough vs. Surfaced Thickness

When you buy a live edge slab, you are paying for the "Rough Sawn" thickness. If a slab is listed as 2" thick (8/4), it will likely finish at around 1.75" after it has been flattened and sanded smooth.

Pro Tip: Always buy a slab slightly thicker than your final project requires to account for the material we remove during the flattening process.

2. Why Measure 3 Spots?

Trees are organic—they taper. A slab might be 30" wide at the base but only 24" wide at the top.

The Industry Standard: We measure the width at the Top, Middle, and Bottom to find the average. This ensures you pay a fair price for the total volume of wood you are actually receiving.

3. Board Feet vs. Square Feet

Don't confuse the two!
Square Feet (Surface Area): Used for flooring or tiling (Length x Width).
Board Feet (Volume): Used for solid lumber. It accounts for thickness. A 12x12 board that is 2 inches thick is 2 Board Feet.
